I called GoDaddy and found out alot of information about buying domain names. We talk about the value of a brand, but now think about the value of a domain name.

Domain names are like real estate, but on the Internet, and is sold in the same way as real estate. Some people buy domain names and just use the domain address for email and park the site, or just park the site for speculation purposes hoping the value will go up, or park it for future use.

Another thing people do is search out popular domain name searches and then buy that domain if it is not yet registered and allow host companies to put advertising on that site and share the revenue from advertising put on the site by companies like GoDaddy. Some people own hundreds of domains and make an income by doing just that, through advertising revenue sharing.

Webtraffic can be determined at alexa.com to help in determining the value of a domain, but the number of page impressions are often exagerated on alexa.com from search engines crawling the Internet and indexing Internet sites.

If you want to buy a domain name already registered then you need to contact the owner of the domain and negotiate to buy it from them. A search on Whois.com will list the owner of a domain name if that information is not marked private. There are companies like Godaddy and Sebo.com that will broker a purchase price for a domain for a broker fee of around $60, in addition to the purchase price of the domain and the cost of registering the domain in your name.

Once a domain name registration expires, there is a 60 day grace period within which time it can be renewed by the original owner; otherwise, the domain name goes to auction after 60days. You can put a backorder bid on a domain name whereby your bid will automatically go in if it expires and is not renewed. You then go into a bidding war with anyone else entering a backorder for that same domain name and the highest bid wins, just like real estate.

GoDaddy has a list of domain names available for auction and I was told that someone sold www.sex.com for $1 million. Wow!

I think I will just seek out the .ca which available and not the .com for my domain name and keep an eye open for the same .com domain.

Thanks Jason,

If I see that a .com domain name is already registered and it is being parked by GoDaddy set to expire at a certain date, is there some way of getting that domain name once it expires? Can I outbid the person on the domain name or does it became a right of first refusal for the domain owner who has a proprietary right to the domain name until they relinguish the right to that domain name? Otherwise, am I out of luck on this.

Thanks again for your advice.

Here are the things I consider when choosing a new name for a business:

1. Is the domain name available?

2. Is anyone else using the name online or as a trademark? Will I run into legal trouble later?

3. Is the name memorable? Will people know what it means when they hear it? Will they know how to look me up online (i.e. can they spell it)?

4. If it is online-based, can I put some search keywords in the name to help with SEO later?

5. What is the first impression people get when they hear the name?

There are a few things to consider. Hope that helps jog some ideas.
